Killing Weeds - The Top 10 Weeds To Target

Whatever the size of your garden, whether you have an acre, a metre or a window box, I have no doubt that you will have had to think about killing weeds. But what type of weed do you have and what is the best way of killing weeds? This article will help you identify what species is growing in your garden and explain the best way of killing weeds.

Although you will never completely eradicate every weed in your garden, killing weeds of the annual variety is essential if you want to have a weed free garden in the future. Below is a list of the top 10 most common annual weeds and how to identify them:

White Single Beds

• Chickweed (Stellaria media) - Grows low to the ground with shallow roots, leaves are oval shaped with a pointy tip and grow to about 15mm - 30mm in length. Small white flowers have 5 petals, each with 2 lobes.

• Groundsel (Senecio vulgaris) - Grows between 12-40cm tall, leaves are elongated and indented along the sides and can grow between 2-10cm long. Yellow flowers form in bell shaped buds.

• Wavy and hairy bittercress (Cardamine flexuosa and C. hirsute) - Can grow to 30cm high with leaves made up of between 2-8 leaflets arranged around a single leaf. It produces small white flowers which have 4 petals.

• Annual nettle (Urtica urens) - Has a mild sting and leaves, which grow to about 4cm long, are deeply toothed. The plant has many side branches and its white flowers are very small.

• Shepherd's purse (Capsella bursa-pastoris) - Has small triangular purse-like pods, a small number of pointed leaves and small white flowers.

• Goosegrass (Galium aparine) - Can grow to nearly 2m in height and has thin leaves and seeds covered in tiny hooks which makes them cling to clothes and fur. It has small white flowers.

• Fat hen (Chenopodium album) - Can grow as high as 150cm and its leaves are a distorted diamond shape, small yellow flowers grow on stalks.

• Sun spurge (Euphorbia helioscopia) - Can grow up to 50cm tall and has oval leaves which are around 3cm long. The flowers are similar to the leaves but are yellow-green in colour.

• Annual meadow-grass (Poa annua) - Grows up to 25cm high and has a flattened stem, its leaves are very long and droop down. Its triangular seeds grow in groups on stems.

• Herb Robert (Geranium robertianum) - Has fern-like leaves and a red stem, its leaves are pink with 5 petals.

The best way of killing weeds that are in the list above is by using a weed killer. Using this method will ensure that both the plant and its roots are eradicated so further growth will be stopped.

Extending The Life Of Your Mattress

As anyone who has shopped for a mattress knows, staring at a sea of white in every store seems hopeless. With so many things to consider - coil count, box springs, innersprings, pillow tops, euro tops, memory foam - it's enough to drive a person mad.

But what it boils down to is comfort. Once consumers have made it past the milestone of choosing a mattress, new mattress owners need to focus on extending the life of this major investment. According to Verlo Mattress Factory Stores franchisor, Peg Buczko, there are a number of steps consumers can take to ensure their mattress meets its life expectancy of 10 years.

"In the marketplace today, there are two-sided and single-sided mattresses available," Buczko said. "Care tips are very similar between the two, except with the single-sided mattress, you need to rotate it, instead of flipping it."

Buczko recommends the following instructions for both product types:

o Use a high-quality washable mattress pad.

o Keep bedding clean by using a mattress pad or by vacuuming the mattress often.

o Replace the old foundation with the new mattress purchase to ensure sufficient support.

o Use a metal bed frame. The use of a metal center support frame for a king- or queen-size set is required for proper setup and usage.

o Body impressions are a normal occurrence in the mattress and indicate upholstery layers are settling and conforming to the body's individual shape.

o For spot cleaning, treat spills and stains as quickly as possible. Use warm soapy water as the main cleanser to remove spills. Avoid dishwashing or laundry detergents, and don't scrub with a brush.

o Take time to adjust to your new mattress; at least one month.

o Don't fold or bend the mattress more than 20 degrees. Don't let anyone stand, jump or kneel on it.

o Don't smoke in bed.

o Don't allow the mattress to get wet.

"Essentially, mattresses are an investment in your health," Buczko said. "So it is really important that consumers take the same care with this investment as they do by getting regular oil changes and tune-ups with their cars. They're just as valuable!"

This time last week, I was sitting in my oldest daughter's new flat. I was helping her get settled in a bit. When she moved in, the room had an old double bed frame. She had borrowed a couple of twins mattresses from us, but what she really, REALLY wanted was a nice futon. Since she has just a studio on the ground floor, she wanted somewhere that her friends could sit when they came over. But also a nice place to sleep. We looked at all the discount websites. But the one she wanted most was almost £300...much more than her budget. What she could get for the hundred pounds or so that she could afford was not a good selection.

So I asked her to give me a few days to check out charity shops, Freecycle and just look around. A pleasant surprise was the following advert that I found on our Islington council's swap exchange:

Free to anyone who wants to collect it, we have a futon in a pine finish. The frame is in very good condition. The cushion/mattress is white and the padding is still pretty good although the cover could do with a clean. It's only ever been used as an incidental sofa/bed but over the years various spillages have marked it. A zip runs all the way down the back so I guess the cover could be removed and washed, although I've never tried myself. We don't have room for it anymore but it seems a shame to throw it out, so if you want it, it's yours.

I emailed and it was still available. We arranged to pick it up this evening, but when we arrived my jaws almost dropped open: it was the EXACT one she wanted. The mattress cover needs a wash or she may use the hundred pounds in her budget to purchase a really nice one. My vote went for using that money to purchase material and the two of us making a couple of them. No matter which option she chooses, I cannot tell you how excited I was to be able to help her out like this...at a time when we are watching every pence. And a special thanks to our angel, Graham, who choose to take the time to re-use this wonderful futon.

Some of you may think...that was lucky. So let me tell you about my other find last week. As I was taking my younger daughter to nursery, I noticed a large clear plastic bag of toys near our bin. I especially noticed the large foam number puzzle on top. Of course, I knew better than to stop and draw her attention to it. But after I dropped her at school, I stopped to explore...and discovered not just the wonderful puzzle but HUNDREDS of pounds worth of Barbie's and accessories. The biggest find was the extremely rare pregnant Midge doll. My older daughter obviously is too old for Barbie and my younger one is really too young just yet. I did something a tad bold: I shared my fetish/find with my neighbour. I was a tad reluctant, but I knocked and explained about the stuff. I was reluctant because how do you say...I was going through the trash and guess what I found. Turns out, she thought it was great and now her grand-daughters are absolutely delighted with their 'new' Barbie's, especially the pregnant one that none of their friends have. In the past, I 'saved' a Little Tikes kitchen set that would have cost close to a hundred pounds.

My point is that...one person's trash is the top of another person's wish list. So before you toss something, check to see if your council has a Swap Exchange or register with Freecycle. Other options include donating it to charity shops, having a yard/car boot sale and like me offering it to friends (I will do another post sometime about how much of my daughter's clothes and toys come this way). Just think you could be the answer to someone's prayer...just like Graham was tonight.
